Project description:
The research project aims to broaden our knowledge about the mechanisms involved in acquiring grammar and vocabulary of a third language (L3-Ln). In particular, it aims to investigate whether and how the knowledge of Polish (L1) and English (L2) shapes the learning of new language (L3-Ln) vocabulary and grammatical structures if they are similar to Polish and/or English. The project will focus on individual differences between language learners as predictors of learning and processing new language grammar and vocabulary (L3-Ln). Recent research indicates that the influence of known languages on learning an L3-Ln can be shaped by such additional factors as the circumstances in which languages are acquired, the level of foreign language proficiency, and individual differences in linguistic and cognitive abilities. This project will explore the nature of those complex relationships. To measure language processing, the project will use neurolinguistic methods (including EEG signal recording – ERP, event-related potentials) and psycholinguistic methods (including eye-tracking).
Within the project, knowledge of quantitative methods and advanced statistical analyses will be popularised among researchers and students of the University of Warsaw engaged in linguistic research and language acquisition studies.
